NEW YORK LATIN LITURGY ASSOCIATION TO HOLD GREGORIAN CHANT WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1996, AT ST. PETER'S CHURCH IN STATEN ISLAND

Would you like to learn how to sing a Gregorian Chant? If so, you won't want to miss the upcoming workshop entitled "Introduction to Gregorian Chant," which will be given by the New York Latin Liturgy Association at St. Peter's Church, 53 St. Mark's Place, Staten Island, New York, on Saturday, April 20, from 9:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. William J. Leininger, Chairman of the New York Latin Liturgy Association, explained that last year, his Association had sponsored a similar Chant workshop, but had to turn away people due to the limited space in the Chapel of St. Peter's. Mr. Leininger stressed that once again, the Chant workshop will be limited to the first 70 people who reserve a space at the workshop.

The schedule for the Chant workshop will be as follows:

9:15 - 9:45 a.m. - Registration

9:45 - 10:00 a.m. - Introductory Remarks by William J. Leininger, Chairman of the New York Latin Liturgy Association

10:00 - 10:30 a.m. - Chant basics

10:35 - 11:35 a.m. - Chant instruction

11:45 - 12:40 p.m. - Chant instruction

12:40 - 1:25 p.m. - Lunch

1:25 - 2:00 p.m. - Divine Office Chant practice

2:05 - 2:50 p.m. - Chant instruction

3:00 - 3:45 p.m. - Chant instruction for Mass

3:45 - 4:00 p.m. - Opportunity for Confession and personal meditation in Chapel

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. - Latin High Mass - 1962 Missal - (fulfills Sunday Mass obligation)

The Chant workshop will be given by Mr. Ed Morand, Director of Music at Holy Family Parish in Staten Island. Mr. Morand received his early Chant instruction at the Palestrina Institute of Music in Detroit, Michigan, in the early 1950's. In 1959, he studied at Pius X School of Music at Manhattanville College under Professor Theodore Marier, Professor Kalman Antos and Dom Dajard, O.S.B. from Solemnes, France. Mr. Morand then obtained a Masters Degree in Education at Columbia University where he studied organ under Dr. Anthony Newman. Mr. Morand has acted as the Cantor and Director of the Schola Cantorum at Holy Family Parish for the past seven years.

Mr. Leininger stressed that it is rare to be able to find such a talented and experienced musician as Mr. Morand, especially one who has had such a wonderful background in Chant.

Mr. Leininger further stressed that this workshop would be an introductory-intermediate level, and would be perfect for people who have not had substantial experience with Gregorian Chant, but perhaps have sung in a parish choir, or have longed to learn how to properly sing Gregorian Chant.

All those who intend the workshop will leave the workshop with the ability to sing and participate at a Latin High Mass, as well as to be able to attend and participate intelligently at Celebration of the Divine Office in Latin.

The cost for the entire day workshop is $20, which includes lunch and the Chant handout material. High school and college students and religious are being offered a special rate of $10. The site of this Workshop, St. Peter's Church, is located only a short 10 minute walk from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. The Church is only a 15 minutes by car from both the Verrazano and Goethal's Bridges, and is thus quite conveniently located for those travelling from Long Island, Brooklyn and New Jersey.

Mr. Leininger stressed that the Chapel at St. Peter's will be used because of its wonderful acoustics - perfect for Gregorian Chant according to Mr. Ed Morand. It is therefore essential that anyone who wishes to attend this workshop, call the Latin Liturgy Association at 718-979-6685 to reserve a space.
