We hope eventually to make audio files available through Princeton
University's <A HREF="http://mondrian.princeton.edu">Mappamundi
Project</A>.  One of the problems is that, though Gregorian chant 
itself is in the public domain, recordings of it are copyrightable.  For a 
rendition of the earliest Christian hymn that survives with music notation 
(from a papyrus fragment of about the fourth century, see the <A HREF="gopher://ithaki.servicenet.ariadne-t.gr/11/HELLENIC_CIVILIZATION">Hellenic Civilization Database</A> on the <HREF="east.html">Eastern Churches</A> page.  Select "Arts," then "Music."  <P>Our link <A HREF="perf.html">"Music Performances and Recordings"</A> will take you to commercial record companies whose home pages include audio clips of early music [i.e., European music from before 1750] and world music [including liturgical chant from the Middle East and other interesting places].
